HISTORY
OF AMELIA

Amelia
The name
Amelia derives from its legendary founder, King Ameroe .
The first community settled in the town’s territory
in about 1134 B.C.and it was called Ameria.
In the 6th and 4th centuries B.C. the ancient walls were
built to defend the town from the raids of the nearby Etruscan
population
In 338 B.C.
Amelia passed under the Roman domination and had a period
of splendor, and many of the ancient baths remain today.
In 313 A.D.
the town became an episcopal seat. It was besieged by the
Goths in 548 A.D. and then it passed to the Byzantine-Roman
population. With the coming of the Middle Ages (1240) Frederick
I 's troops attacked the city and it passed to the dominion
of the Church.
Many renowned
figures were born in Amelia, as the artist Piermatteo d’Amelia
and Alessandro Geraldini, who sailed with Christopher Columbus
and was appointed the first bishop of America. (points
