AMELIA
On the ridge dividing
the valleys of the Tiber and Nera, the majestic and lately
prosperous hill town of Amelia was clamed by Roman writers
like Pliny and Cato to be among the oldest Italian cities.
Founded in the 12th century BC; impressive portions of its
6th century walls, the Mura Poligoni, remain along with
bits of Roman masonry and columns which can be seen throughout
the town. The Renaissance sculptor Agostino di Duccio is
buried here, in the 13th-century San Francesco, along wit
the Geraldini Family, whose tombs he sculpted. Some of Duccio's
characteristic bas-reliefs, and the tomb of Bishop Geraldini
are in the Duomo (first Bishop to the America's).
