Permits
in Umbria
Any
work to the external facade of an Italian building requires
a permit in order to be modified. The restrictions vary
considerably from area to area and town to town. In the
umbrian countryside permits can be granted in as little
as 3-4 months. In areas considered the centro storico it
can be as long as a year and half.
Permit
times and restrictions will also vary in regards to the
structure. In Umbria's Historical buildings you generally
can not change the size or add windows. The volumn of the
building must remain the same and the outside appearance
can be limited in color or physical make-up. The ancient
mills in Umbria have recently been added to the historical
list and must maintain the original features and style.
Country
houses have been granted a bit more leniency in regards
to reconstruction and rennovation. Most farm houses and
country houses in Umbria have the right to increase the
volumn 10% and in many cases 100 square meters or more.
Annex buildings that were formally used for animals or farm
equipment can be converted into livable space and the volumn
increased.
