TODI
Located on the ancient borders of the Etruscan and Umbrian
teritories. According to legend an eagle lead the ancient
Umbrians to the hill top that was settled as TUDER. Between
the 5th and 4th cs. B.C. the settlement became part of the
Etruscan world. Afterwards it was conquered by the Romans
as Colonia Julia Fida Tuder and coined its own money. By
the beginning of the 12th century Todi was a prosperous
and growning free comune. During this period the Roman-Etruscan
city walls were for the most part demolished and a larger
set of walls was built to accommodate the growth of the
city. Afterwards an extensive building campaign saw the
construction of the civic palaces and the Duomo around the
main square. By the beginning of the 14th century Todi came
under the dominion of the Papal dominion.
Todi was the birth place of Saint Pope Martin I (died 655),
but its greatest son was Jacopo Benedetti (1228-1306), known
as Fra’ Jacopone, an eccentric and charismatic Franciscan
monk, great Latin and vulgate poet, famous for Le Laudi
and the Stabat Mater transformed into music by the greatest
composers. (click
